Sana’a (Terror Monitor) — Military sources in Yemen said more than 140 fighters from both sides were killed in clashes between government forces and Iran-aligned Houthi fighters in southwestern Yemen from Saturday afternoon until Sunday morning.
According to AFP, two military officials from Yemen’s Saudi-backed government said 84 of their personnel were killed, most of them in Houthi missile attacks.
Four Houthi military sources also said 57 of their fighters were killed during the same period.
The recent clashes over control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the southern gateway to the Red Sea, have been the deadliest in Yemen in the past two months. The fighting comes after the 2022 ceasefire agreement between the Houthis and Yemen’s government forces collapsed.
The Houthis launched an attack on Thursday aimed at cutting communications from the port of Mocha, which has been under attack for several weeks. Houthi forces have also been advancing toward areas adjacent to the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
According to figures compiled by AFP from military and medical sources on both sides, more than 300 fighters and some civilians have been killed since Thursday.
With the Strait of Hormuz closed, the Bab al-Mandab Strait has become increasingly important for Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest crude oil exporter, as a route for its oil exports.
The Houthis, who refer to themselves as Ansar Allah, control large parts of northern Yemen, the western Red Sea coast and the capital, Sana’a.
The internationally recognized Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council controls eastern and southern coastal areas, including the port city of Aden.
