11 Injured in Truck Bomb Explosion Near Police Station in Colombia

Cucuta (Terror Monitor) — A truck loaded with explosives detonated near a police station in the Colombian city of Cúcuta, close to the Venezuelan border, on Saturday, injuring at least 11 people, according to authorities.

The explosion occurred just six days before President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella is scheduled to be sworn into office, AFP journalists at the scene reported.

Witnesses said the truck was engulfed in flames after the blast, while the facades of nearby buildings were damaged. Police officers, soldiers, and local residents quickly gathered at the site as emergency responders secured the area.

Authorities confirmed that 11 people were injured in the explosion. The cause of the attack and those responsible have not yet been officially identified.

Right-wing President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella is due to take office on August 7, succeeding Gustavo Petro, Colombia's first left-wing president.

Traditionally, Colombia's presidential inauguration is held at the Congress building in Bogotá. However, at the request of the president-elect, this year's ceremony has been moved to the southwestern city of Cali, an area that has experienced frequent clashes involving drug trafficking organizations and guerrilla groups.

Colombia's recent election campaign was also marked by political violence. In 2025, right-wing presidential candidate and Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot during a campaign event in Bogotá and later died from his injuries.

President-elect de la Espriella has repeatedly claimed that there are ongoing plots to assassinate him, raising concerns over security ahead of his inauguration.
