MAGDEBURG (Terror Monitor) — A German court has sentenced a Saudi doctor to life imprisonment for driving a car into a crowd at a Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg in 2024, an attack that killed six people and injured hundreds.
The defendant, identified under German privacy laws as “Taleb A,” is a Saudi-born psychiatrist. Authorities said he had expressed admiration for anti-Islam rhetoric and held far-right ideological views.
According to prosecutors, the attacker drove a rented BMW into the crowded market for more than a minute, deliberately targeting pedestrians. The incident was planned over several weeks, investigators said.
Six victims were killed in the attack, including five women aged between 45 and 75 and a nine-year-old child. The defendant was also charged with attempted murder in hundreds of additional cases.
Prosecutors stated that the motive appeared to stem from frustration and anger following unsuccessful legal disputes and civil court rulings. Investigators concluded that he acted alone.
The court imposed a life sentence with a finding of “particular severity of guilt,” meaning the defendant will not be eligible for parole after 15 years and is expected to remain in prison for a significantly longer period.
