Beirut (Terror Monitor) Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem has declared that the Iran-backed group will continue what it described as "defensive operations" against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, rejecting Israel's continued military presence in the area.
According to Iran's state news agency IRNA, Qassem said in an interview with Lebanese media on Sunday that efforts to eliminate Iran and the region's "Axis of Resistance" had failed, adding that a new phase had begun following what he described as the failure of US and Israeli plans.
He further claimed that Iran had emerged stronger from the recent conflict and, despite making significant sacrifices, had demonstrated that it would not abandon what it considers its legitimate rights.
Reports indicated a relative decline in clashes between Hezbollah and Israeli forces in southern Lebanon on Sunday. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli troops would remain in southern Lebanon for as long as necessary to ensure the security of northern Israel.
Responding to Netanyahu's remarks, Qassem rejected the continued Israeli military presence in southern Lebanon and reiterated that Hezbollah would maintain its defensive operations until Israeli forces withdraw.
