Libya: Haftar’s Military Intelligence Chief Killed in Targeted Bomb Attack

Benghazi (Terror Monitor) — Maj. Gen. Fawzi al-Mansouri, head of the Military Intelligence Department of the eastern-based forces led by Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar, was killed Monday in a targeted assassination, according to a Libyan security official.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an improvised explosive device planted beneath Mansouri’s vehicle detonated as he was about to get into the car outside his home in the al-Sayyida Aisha residential neighborhood in eastern Benghazi.
The official described the incident as a “terrorist attack.”
No official statement has yet been issued regarding Mansouri’s death.
Mansouri had served as commander of the Sabha Military Zone since Aug. 3, 2021. Haftar appointed him head of the Military Intelligence Department on May 20, 2024.
Libya Remains Divided
Libya remains divided between rival political and military authorities more than a decade after the 2011 overthrow of longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi.
The internationally recognized Government of National Unity, headed by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh and based in Tripoli, administers western Libya.
In the east, an administration appointed by the House of Representatives and headed by Osama Hammad operates with the support of Haftar’s forces and controls much of eastern and southern Libya.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya has for years sought to broker a political settlement and pave the way for nationwide elections aimed at ending the country’s prolonged political division and armed conflict.
