Niamey (Terror Monitor) Authorities in Niger say that 35 people were killed after heavily armed terrorists attacked the country's largest airport on Thursday, marking the second such assault in less than five months.
Earlier this year in January, an attack on the same airport left four soldiers injured, while 20 attackers were killed.
Residents of the Muslim-majority country told the Terror Monitor they had just finished morning prayers when they heard explosions and gunfire coming from Diori Hamani International Airport in the capital, Niamey.
According to Niger's Ministry of Defence, the dead include 22 attackers, 11 soldiers, and two civilians.
Officials also said that four attackers were wounded and 20 suspects were arrested.
Security forces seized a large cache of weapons, including RPG-7 launchers, AK-47 rifles, explosives, grenades, communication equipment, and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
On Thursday evening, the al-Qaeda-affiliated group Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the attack.
