US CENTCOM Establishes ‘Iron Gate’ Task Force to Disrupt Iran’s Weapons Supply Routes

Washington, D.C. (Terror Monitor) — The US Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced the establishment of a new task force aimed at disrupting Iran’s ability to transport advanced weapons systems, military equipment and other sanctioned materials through its land borders and the Caspian Sea, expanding Washington’s pressure on Tehran beyond its months-long naval blockade.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper directed the formation of Task Force Iron Gate on November 7. The new unit will be based in Tampa, Florida, and will comprise approximately 20 military and civilian personnel, according to an official statement released by the command.
The task force will coordinate with other US government agencies to prevent the movement of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, sanctioned materials and what Washington describes as illicit revenue streams across Iran’s land borders and the Caspian Sea.
Dual-use technologies refer to equipment and materials that can serve both civilian and military purposes, potentially including items used in weapons manufacturing and military production.
Admiral Cooper said the initiative would strengthen cooperation between CENTCOM and other US government agencies, further restricting Iran’s ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories and replenish its military stockpiles.
“The establishment of Task Force Iron Gate reinforces the success of our ironclad blockade against Iran at sea,” Cooper said in the statement.
He added that closer coordination with US government partners would further constrain Tehran’s ability to finance militant activities, rebuild its weapons production facilities and restore its military capabilities.
Naval blockade and $25 billion oil export claim
CENTCOM said the establishment of the new task force builds on its ongoing naval blockade of Iranian ports, which the command claims has prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion worth of crude oil in recent months.
The US military said strict enforcement measures remain in place against vessels entering or departing Iranian ports.
The new initiative represents an expansion of Washington’s efforts to restrict Iran’s access to international supply networks by targeting overland transportation routes and maritime connections through the Caspian Sea, in addition to existing naval restrictions.
Reuters investigation highlights Iran’s supply networks
In a separate report published on Saturday, Reuters said Iran had continued importing military-related equipment despite the US naval blockade.
According to the Reuters investigation, Iran imported at least $2 billion worth of military-related equipment since January 2025 through a covert supply network involving ships from Russia, trucks operating through Central Asia and freight aircraft from China.
The report highlights the challenges facing Washington in attempting to disrupt Iran’s military supply chains, particularly those operating through land routes and regional trade networks.
The establishment of Task Force Iron Gate is intended to address these vulnerabilities by bringing together CENTCOM and other US government agencies to monitor and restrict the movement of military equipment, dual-use technologies and financial resources.
The initiative comes amid continued US efforts to weaken Iran’s military production capabilities, restrict its sources of revenue and prevent the replenishment of its weapons stockpiles.
