Yemen: 65 Killed in Clashes Between Saudi-Backed Forces and Iran-Backed Houthis

Sanaa (Terror Monitor) — At least 65 people have been killed in intense clashes between Saudi-backed government forces and Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in southern Yemen, as fighting escalates amid growing tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
Both sides said that at least 48 people were killed over the past 24 hours. Government military sources said 17 government personnel were killed in the clashes, while the Houthis claimed that 31 of their fighters were killed. The latest casualties underscore the continued intensity of the conflict in Yemen, with no clear signs of an end to the fighting.
The Houthi movement has significantly intensified its military activities in recent weeks. This month, the Houthis have further consolidated their control over Yemen’s Red Sea coastal areas, potentially affecting the regional balance of power.
The Houthis control much of northern Yemen, including densely populated areas, and have been fighting Saudi Arabia and its allies for years. The group is widely regarded as being closely aligned with Iran, while Yemen’s internationally recognized government is backed by Saudi Arabia and its allies.
Tensions have increased further since the Houthis announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia in July. The Houthis have since targeted Saudi interests and shipping routes in the Red Sea, while Saudi Arabia says it has carried out multiple airstrikes against Houthi positions.
The Houthis claim that hundreds of airstrikes have been carried out against areas under their control in recent days. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, accuses the Houthis of threatening regional peace, energy infrastructure and maritime trade.
The escalating tensions in Yemen are no longer solely a local issue, with repercussions being felt internationally. The Red Sea is one of the world’s most important commercial shipping routes, and Houthi activity and the ongoing conflict have raised concerns over international maritime trade and oil supplies.
