Explosion at Temporary Weapons Depot in Syria Kills at Least 14

DAMASCUS (Terror Monitor) — At least 14 people were killed and 11 others injured in an explosion at a temporary storage facility for weapons and explosives near the town of Sarmada in Syria’s Idlib province, according to Syrian state television. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise.

Syrian state media reported the incident on Wednesday, citing the Ministry of Health.

The cause of the explosion at the warehouse near Sarmada was not immediately known. However, incidents involving weapons and unexploded ordnance are relatively common in Syria, which was devastated by more than a decade of war.

The state-run SANA news agency, citing the Ministry of Defense, reported that the warehouse was being used to store weapons and ammunition left over from the uprising and civil war that lasted from 2011 to 2024. No further details were provided.

Rescue workers from the Syrian Civil Defense and Syrian Arab Red Crescent are searching the rubble for possible survivors. An Associated Press photographer at the scene witnessed bodies being recovered from the debris.

Videos circulating on social media following the explosion showed a large plume of black smoke rising into the sky, while intermittent smaller explosions could also be heard.
