WASHINGTON, D.C./TEHRAN (Terror Monitor)— The United States and Iran have reportedly agreed to halt further military attacks against each other and resume technical-level negotiations, following a fresh exchange of strikes over the weekend despite an interim peace agreement.
According to a senior U.S. official, the latest round of retaliatory attacks between June 27 and 28 prompted both sides to reach an understanding to stop further military operations and restart discussions on implementing the provisions of the memorandum of understanding (MoU).
"Resuming technical negotiations on all provisions of the bilateral memorandum is now a settled matter," the official told reporters.
The official also said both parties had agreed to cease attacks, allowing commercial vessels to move freely through the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters.
According to Axios, U.S. and Iranian negotiators are expected to meet in Doha, Qatar, on June 30 for the next round of talks.
Although a ceasefire has largely been in place since April, repeated exchanges of military strikes have continued to threaten security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas shipments.
On Sunday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it had carried out strikes on 10 military targets inside Iran, citing what it described as Iran's continued aggressive actions against commercial shipping.
In response, Iran reportedly attempted to target U.S. military interests in Bahrain and Kuwait with rockets and missiles, further raising regional tensions.
